Texas, by Way of Texas

I was born somewhere else, but I was raised in Texas. My parents moved our family to Corpus Christi when I was one year old. Hurricane Celia had hit the year before, and some of the damage was still visible when we arrived. That is one of my earliest senses of Texas: a place that gets knocked down hard and gets right back up. The gritty, plain-spoken “get back on the horse” energy resonates with me.

I went to college at Baylor University in Waco, where I earned a B.A. in Economics in 1991. At Baylor, I played varsity tennis for a year, whereas in high school I competed at the UIL 4A Boys Doubles State Tennis Tournament in 1988, which at least implies that I peaked athletically at age 18. Athletics aside, Baylor’s emphasis on service to others left a mark on how I think about leadership: the best kind of leader leads through service. That idea has shaped how I have practiced law for more than three decades.

I went to law school at South Texas College of Law in Houston. After law school, I moved to Chicago for the early part of my legal career, which is how I ended up licensed in both Illinois (1996) and Texas (1997). In 2017, my family and I moved back to Texas, where we have been ever since. I am the father of four kids.

Kyle From Kyle, TX

About five miles down the road from our office is the town of Kyle, Texas. Yes, especially when I am there, I am Kyle from Kyle. It is a coincidence I find genuinely entertaining, and one that has somehow become a running joke with my family. While I take my legal work seriously, I do not take myself too seriously. If you follow our social media, you may occasionally see a “Kyle from Kyle” post: short, light, sometimes useful, sometimes just a small joke about Texas life or legal work.

What I am not: an aggressive, billboard-style attorney. What I am: someone who has been doing this work for more than 20 years across multiple practice areas, who speaks plainly, and who will tell you what I actually think.

Languages, Family, and Life Outside Work

I speak English and Spanish. Our firm also serves clients in Hindi and Urdu through team members and contracted interpreters.

Outside the office, I am the father of four and the husband of a former big-firm attorney who is building her own practice. I used to windsurf when I was younger and still get out on the water in rare but meaningful circumstances. A few years ago, my kids and I took a Father’s Day windsurfing lesson together, which was somewhere between hilarious and humbling. I read more than I should, mostly history, economics, law, and current events, and I follow Texas sports too closely for my own good.
